Recap · Week 1 · Cross-Industry Collaboration
Last week: the Marriage of Brands
The step up
Level 4 refreshed one brand. Level 5 marries two: one fashion, one not.
The test: three conditions
Both identities survive. A real person gains something. Somebody can actually make it.
What you handed in
A sourced Brand DNA map, a one-page Marriage of Brands proposal, and a peer review scored out of 15.
60 seconds, tell your neighbour
“The element I protected was ___. The assumption I must test is ___.”
Where we are
The customer chain, and the step we are on
Last week you chose two real brands to pair. This week the job changes: make people want the pairing before anyone can buy it.

Stage 05
Customer
This week
Story, access and proof sit inside Route to market. We design the demand, then ask whether the product, delivery and relationship earned it.
The claim we will test
“The story is built before the product.”
We will treat this as a claim to test, not a fact to repeat. The evidence supports a weaker, more useful version: a story can run before retail, but a finished design calendar is rarely proven. We will land on the refined claim at the end.
Image: frame from the Nike x Yu-Gi-Oh! trailer, via Nike newsroom. The character and his shoes existed in the story long before the product. Research reference, not an endorsement. Brand and campaign copyright; retain credit. Check UH permission before projection.
The spine of the session
Story, Access, Proof
01
Story
Why two worlds belong together
The reason the pairing makes sense. Something a fan can recognise and judge.
02
Access
How the audience participates
The route in: a draw, a membership, a pre-order, a thing fans can remake.
03
Proof
Did attention become demand
Whether interest turned into real orders, and whether the relationship lasted.
Hold this
We will press each of the four worked cases against all three. A case can be strong on one and empty on another.
Section B
The Drop
Engineering scarcity, and the different mechanics hiding under that one word.
Films: Gentle Monster Pocket Collection campaign with Bratz and Karina, streamed from gentlemonster.com. Brand and campaign copyright; retain credit.
The Drop
Scarcity is not one thing
“It was a limited drop” can mean six different things. Each mechanic answers a different question.

The Reveal
Narrative, order and timing. Who tells the story first, and how long it keeps circulating.

The Reveal
Creator-led is not creator-first
Creator-led
The brand posts it. The creator performs in it.
Creator-first
An independent creator breaks it on their own account, before the brand.
What the record shows
Karina’s unboxing sat on Gentle Monster’s own account, archived 22 May 2025. Sale: 30 May. That is talent-led brand content, eight days early.
The check: look at the account name and the date. Not the face.
Example: Gentle Monster / Bratz / Karina, per PTKOREA archive and SNKRDUNK. Animation is an illustration, not a screenshot.

What the US page says today. Three different customers could want it: eyewear buyers, Bratz collectors, Karina fans.
Proof
Proof is thin

Story
Learn the dance, join the story
Dance makes the denim social. A known song gets you in. Learning the routine gives you a part to play.
Access
Wide denim, one limited hoodie
Anyone can buy the jeans. The co-designed hoodie is the scarce object, on pre-order from 22 August.

Each jacket is a one-off artwork
Old Barbour jackets, reworked and painted by an artist. The limit is real because no two are the same.

26 Aug loyalty members. 27 Aug everyone in the UK. 28 Aug a £5 charity raffle for Centrepoint.
Proof
No sell-through published
We know the offer, not the outcome. And no influencer reveal was found: a retailer and an artist did it alone.
Ask the room
Does a limit of ten make it mean more, or just make it harder to buy?

Section E · the cost of hype
Nike / RTFKT: a story that depended on support

Evidence discipline
Four things a number is not
01
Views
A view is not a person. Playback counts repeat and overlap.
02
Impressions
An impression is not a sale. It is a chance to be seen.
03
Resale ask
A resale ask is not a completed trade. A listing is not a receipt.
04
Fast stock-out
A fast stock-out is not high volume. It can mean very little stock.
Back to the running claim
The story is built before the product fails the strong test and survives the weak one. Refined: the story and route to access are designed before the customer can buy; they must still be justified by product, delivery and a continuing relationship.
Section F · Afternoon workshop

Module rule. Say which AI tool you used. Label every image as a concept mock-up, not a photo of a real product.
Step 01 · 15 minutes · no AI yet
Brainstorm: eight ideas in eight minutes
Fold a sheet into eight boxes. One rough sketch or line per box, one minute each. Use one recognisable thing from each brand.
1
Something you wear
A garment, a shoe, a pair of glasses
2
Something you carry
A bag, a case, a keyring
3
The packaging
The box as the hero object
4
A collectible
A figure, a card, a numbered item
5
For the home
An object that lives on a shelf
6
A digital item
A filter, a skin, a game item
7
An experience
A pop-up, an event, a ritual
8
Wild card
The idea that sounds too odd
Then pick one · 5 minutes
1
Story fit
Does it make sense that these two made it?
2
Makeable
Could it really be produced and sold?
3
Showable
Would a fan want to film themselves with it?
Rule: quantity first. Bad ideas are allowed. Circle the one that passes all three.
Step 02 · 15 minutes
Story: Narrative Architecture, six fields
Write the story for the idea you picked, before you make any picture of it.
01
World
The shared setting the two brands live in.
02
Tension
The friction or surprise that makes it interesting.
03
Why these two
One line. The reason the pairing is not random.
04
Drop mechanic
Which of the six access routes, and who it serves first.
05
Reveal sequence
Who reveals, in what order, over how many days.
06
Proof metric
The honest measure that would show demand, not just attention.
Step 03 · 20 minutes
Research: build a nine-image reference board
Brand AIts colour

Brand BIts colour
Brand BIts material or texture

AI can only make what you can describe. You can only describe what you have looked at.
01
Where to look
The brands’ own sites and campaigns, press images, Pinterest, the cases from this morning.
02
What to write down
For each image, three plain words: a colour, a material, a shape. These become your prompt.
03
Keep the source
Note where each image came from. References are for looking, not for copying.
Step 04 · 15 minutes
Prompt: engineer the idea into words the tool can use
A prompt is a recipe. Seven ingredients, in this order.

01
Take words from your board
Your colour, material and shape words go straight into the brand code slots.
02
Say what you do not want
“No text, no logos” stops the tool inventing fake branding.
03
Write it down first
Put the full prompt on your worksheet before you paste it anywhere.
